The 5 Solas, often referred to as The 5 Pillars of the Reformation, are foundational principles central to the doctrine of salvation as taught by Reformed Protestants.
Sola Scriptura – Scripture Alone
The Bible alone is the source of all authority for Christians.
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” – 2 Timothy 3:16
Solus Christus – Christ Alone
Because Jesus Christ is the sole mediator between God and man, salvation is possible only by his death and resurrection.
“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:10-11
Sola Gratia – Grace Alone
Our justification and salvation are both solely by the sovereign grace of God and not dependent on any action or condition man provides.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9
Sola Fide – Faith Alone
Our justification before God is by faith in Christ alone, and not by works.
“Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.” Romans 3:28, 4:3
Soli Deo Gloria – Glory to God Alone
The glory of God is the goal of life. All glory and honor is due to God alone.
“Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31
